Bioinformatics Scientist/Scientific Programmer

     The Stowers Institute has an opening for a Scientific Programmer to assist the Bioinformatics Center in data management tasks.

     Responsibilities include analyzing protein sequence, structure and evolution; evaluating, recommending, acquiring, integrating, developing, and deploying various bioinformatics applications to retrieve, analyze, synthesize, and visualize genome sequencing data and providing end-user support in these tasks.

     In addition to excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment, the successful candidate will have experience in the analysis of proteome-scale data, Graphics Processing Unit programming, and Cluster computing (i.e. Sun Grid Engine).

     Minimum requirements include an M.S. in Physical or Biological Sciences, Computer Science or Mathematics; knowledge of at least one programming language (C/C++, PERL, Python, Ruby); knowledge of protein sequence and structure databases, software, and approaches to analysis of protein sequence and structure; knowledge of methods for phylogenetic inference; knowledge of molecular graphics, visualization and three-dimensional modeling of macromolecules; and five or more years of relevant experience, including user support in an academic setting, writing technical reports, and publishing peer-reviewed articles. Electron Microscopy Specialist

     The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for an Electron Microscopy (EM) Specialist in the Histology Department.

     Responsibilities include providing high quality research EM services using established protocols; daily operation of the electron microscopy lab; using and maintaining the microscopes and ancillary equipment; assisting researchers with specimen preparation; sample preparation, including sample receipt, fixation, processing, and embedding; development of protocols; training SIMR research members and other users of techniques and equipment; development of seminars and/or presentations for internal training; purchasing supplies; and maintaining records/archives of the EM lab operation.

     In addition to excellent organizational, communication, and problem solving skills, the successful candidate should be familiar with operation of all applicable specimen preparation equipment and microscopes (TEM and SEM); skilled at standard specimen preparation protocols and identifying associated artifacts; have experience in high pressure freezing, cryoEM techniques, and immuno EM; be able to lift in excess of 30 pounds; and able to work overtime, including weekday, weekend, or on call work.

Postdoctoral Research Associate

     The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate with interest in the field of neurobiology.

     The successful candidate will participate in research in one or more of the following areas: the identification of neural circuitry involved in specific behavioral tasks, the molecular mechanisms of circuit specification and development, and the plasticity of the neural circuitry.

     Qualified candidates will hold a doctoral degree in the life sciences, chemistry, biophysics, or other related fields. Candidates with experience in molecular biology, electrophysiology, neuroscience, engineering, or computer science are encouraged to apply.

Programmer Analyst

     The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Programmer Analyst to provide operational and data analysis support for Next-Generation DNA Sequencing Informatics processes.

     Responsibilities include installing, configuring and supporting vendor-supplied instrument control software solutions; tracking, predicting and developing plans to accommodate the disk storage requirements based on current and planned usage; monitoring and supporting the production next-generation DNA sequencing pipeline; and performing QA sequencing runs, organizing the results and communicating the completion status and QA results to appropriate staff.

     In addition to excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment, preference will be given to candidates having knowledge and interest in biology and genomics, experience with DNA/protein sequence analysis, or familiarity with statistical data analysis tools (R/Matlab). Experience with pipeline/workflow systems (i.e. GNU make); cluster computing (i.e. Sun Grid Engine), Bioperl, and the Ensembl API are beneficial.

     Minimum requirements include a Bachelors degree in computer science, statistics, math, engineering, or related fields; experience with software development in a Linux environment with at least one of the scripting languages (PERL, Python) and one high-level language (C++, Java); experience designing, coding, documenting, deploying and supporting custom software; experience with relational database applications development (i.e. MySQL, Postgresql).

Research Specialist I

     The Stowers Institute has an opening for a research specialist with excellent expertise in molecular biology and biochemistry techniques to assist with project management and scientific experiments on transcriptional regulatory networks.

Research Technician

     The Stowers Institute is currently seeking a Research Technician to support research on muscle development, cell fusion, and the nephritic system in Drosophila.

     Primary responsibilities include cloning and characterizing tagged proteins for use in tissue culture and immunostaining of cells and embryos. Additional responsibilities include general lab maintenance and organization. The ideal candidate will also carry out biochemical procedures involving protein-protein interactions, and/or confocal microscopy, and may have the potential for independent research projects.

     The successful candidate will be familiar with current molecular methods including DNA preparation, PCR amplification, restriction digests, basic DNA cloning and sterile techniques for bacterial growth. Experience in microscopy, tissue culture methods and/or protein purification is beneficial.

     Minimum requirements include an undergraduate degree in the biological sciences plus experience in a scientific laboratory beyond coursework, excellent organizational and communication skills, flexibility, and an ability to function in a team-oriented environment. The ideal candidate with have related full-time lab experience beyond a bachelor’s degree.

Research Technician

     The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Research Technician to support the Laboratory Animal Services.

     Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, maintaining and monitoring animal husbandry, health, production, and the physical surroundings within various animal care environments. The successful candidate will be able to follow all procedures necessary to maintain animal housing areas or environments, which includes personnel entry; equipment and material processing into controlled areas; monitor and record daily animal health and production; perform all methods of blood collection, tissue collection, and injections with accuracy; set up animals for timed matings; maintenance of colonies according to department standard; and assist with restraint, handling and manipulation of various animal species within a controlled environment.

     This position calls for excellent written and verbal communication skills; the ability to work in a team oriented environment; the physical capacity to lift and move 50 pounds as well as sit, stand, and move from place to place; and the ability to use scientific equipment and computers.

     Minimum requirements include an Associate’s Degree or equivalent. The preferred candidate will have AALAS certification and/or experience in animal handling, husbandry, and production..

Research Technician

     The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Research Technician to support research into the molecular pathway of leukemogenesis.

     Primary responsibilities include using biochemistry and molecular biology techniques and maintaining lab equipment and supplies.

Research Technician

     A Research Technician I position is open to highly-motivated people wishing to participate in cutting-edge biomedical research. The successful candidate will participate in research projects in molecular and developmental neurobiology. The research uses mice as an animal model and involves one or more of the following technologies: molecular biology, analytical chemistry, optical imaging and histology. Responsibilities include assisting senior scientists in experiments, performing independent research as well as assisting with lab maintenance.

     The successful candidate will be highly independent to engage in a rigorous research program; have excellent written and verbal communication skills; and the ability to effectively work in a team-oriented environment.

     Requirements include an undergraduate degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, neuroscience, or a related field as well as experience in a research environment. Candidates with other backgrounds, such as computer science, engineering and mathematics are also encouraged to apply.

Research Technician

     The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Research Technician perform a broad range of experiments in the areas of biochemistry, molecular and cell biology in a PI Lab.

     Responsibilities include working closely with other lab members on designing experimental outlines; independently performing experiments, analyzing data and troubleshooting problems; using modern techniques in molecular biology, biochemistry, tissue culture, and microscopy to solve problems in biomedical science.

     This position may also be responsible for evaluating new techniques and technology; developing laboratory guidelines, maintaining procedures manuals, and /or evaluating new materials and equipment; and training incoming personnel in proper lab conduct and instructing in experimental procedures.

     In addition to excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team oriented environment, the successful candidate will have operational knowledge of advanced molecular biology techniques.

     Minimum requirements include an undergraduate degree in chemistry or life sciences and at least two years of laboratory experience.

Research Technician

     The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Research Technician to conduct research on chromatin structure in Drosophila. Responsibilities include DNA cloning and plasmid preparation, modification of gene sequences using PCR, basic protein purification and immuno precipation of proteins from flies and bacteria.

     The successful candidate will have experience in molecular biology that includes DNA cloning and preparation, PCR amplification, and bacterial transformation. Protein manipulation and purification are desirable, in addition to a willingness to learn Drosophila genetics. Alternatively, a working knowledge of confocal microscopy and maintenance/transformation of eukaryotic cultured cells are advantageous.

     Minimum requirements include an undergraduate or graduate degree in a science related field plus the requisite years of experience in a scientific laboratory; excellent communication skills; and ability to effectively function in a team environment.

Science Writer

     The Stowers Institute seeks a Science Writer to manage a variety of communications and outreach initiatives related to the Institute’s basic biomedical research.

     Responsibilities include writing for both scientific and lay audiences, including production of magazine-style publications and newsletters; drafting and coordinating press releases; managing Web content for www.stowers.org; writing research grant proposals; and editing scientific manuscripts. This position reports to the Institute’s President.

Security Officer

     The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for the position of Security Officer to assist with maintaining a safe and secure environment; greeting and assisting members, visitors and guests; protecting the physical assets of the Institute; and responding to emergencies.

     Responsibilities include monitoring the closed circuit television system, access control, and security alarm systems for the campus; patrolling all outside grounds, parking areas, and interior buildings of the Institute by motor vehicle and/or on foot; responding to calls for service which may involve alarm events, contact of suspicious persons/vehicles, unlock of offices, response to fire, medical and chemical spill emergencies; and other security desk duties including access card issues for employees, screening and checking in guests, responding to email requests and issuing door keys and parking stickers.

     In addition to excellent verbal and written communication skills, the successful candidate will be able to work with minimal supervision; maintain a service-oriented demeanor; and have experience in law enforcement or security.

     The minimum requirements include high school diploma or GED; Armed Class A Patrol Agent license with the Kansas City Missouri Police Department; and the ability to be certified in CPR with AED and Basic First Aid. Senior Research Technician

     The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Senior Research Technician to perform research in a laboratory working at the interface of imaging, developmental biology and cancer.

     Responsibilities include using molecular biology including PCR, cloning and vector construction to dissect the cellular and molecular mechanisms of a particular biological process of lab interest. RNA techniques including in situ hybridization and RT-PCR will also be utilized and interfaced with 2-photon and confocal microscopy data collection. Projects will be team-based and will have an individual research component.

     In addition to excellent organization and communication skills and the ability to effectively function in a team-oriented environment, the successful candidate will be highly motivated to learn and support biomedical research, including maintaining lab equipment and supplies.

     The minimum requirements include an MS in biology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry or related field, or a BS in related field with at least 2 years laboratory experience. Preference will be given to those with a strong background in molecular biology.

Statistician/Programmer Analyst

     The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Statistician/Programmer Analyst to conduct statistical/bioinformatics on a variety of data.

     Primary responsibilities include analyzing "omics" data generated in-house, developing tools for biological data analysis; and collaborating within the group and with biologists at the institute to establish and maintain the analysis pipeline. In addition to excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively function in a team-oriented environment, preference will be given to candidates having knowledge and interest in biology and genomics, or familiarity with SAS, R and Bioconductor packages.

     Minimum requirements include a Masters degree in statistics, biostatistics, bioinformatics, or related field; understanding of genomics, molecular biology, and microbiology, and knowledge of at least one scripting language (PERL, Unix shell).

Medical Insurance/

Pharmacy Coverage

Medical Insurance and Pharmacy coverage is available to eligible members and their eligible dependents. Individuals have a choice between two plans which are provided through Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Kansas City:  the Blue Care HMO Plan (premium is fully paid by the Company) and the Preferred Care Blue PPO Plan (premium is partially paid by the participant, on a pre-tax basis). 

Dental Insurance

Dental insurance is available at no cost for monthly premiums to eligible members and their eligible dependents.  Coverage is through Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Kansas City – Preferred Care Dental Plan and includes both in-network and out-of network options.

Vision Coverage

Vision coverage is available to eligible members and their eligible dependents on a voluntary basis through Vision Signature Plan (VSP).  The premium is fully paid by the participant, on a pre-tax basis.  Coverage begins first day of the month coinciding with, or following date of hire/eligibility.

Life Insurance

Term Life Insurance coverage and Accidental Death & Dismemberment coverage is provided at no cost to all eligible members.  Coverage is equal to two times a member’s base annual salary, rounded to the next higher $1,000 to a maximum of $500,000.  Members may also purchase Additional Life Insurance on themselves, Spouse Life Insurance, and/or Dependent Life Insurance.

Tax Savings Plan

Non-reimbursable Health Care Expenses (participant annual limit = $5,000)
Child/Dependent Care Expenses (household annual limit = $5,000)

Stowers Group Retirement Plan

Eligible members receive contribution of 15% of their eligible annual salary each year into a retirement account as long as the contributions do not exceed limits fixed by law.  Contributions will begin upon qualification of the member as set forth in the plan. 

403(b) Savings Plan

Members may contribute between 1% and 50% of their salary each pay period, up to the allowable contribution set by law, on a tax-deferred basis.  The Plan allows for both Traditional (pre-tax) and Roth (after-tax) salary deferrals.

Holiday Leave

Eligible members are entitled to 11 major holidays per year to include:  New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas and Day after Christmas. 

Vacation Leave

Full-time members accrue from 120 - 200 hours of paid vacation leave per year (to a maximum of 4.615 - 7.692 hours per pay period) based on job classification and length of service. Vacation accrual begins on the first day of employment or transfer to a benefit eligible position.  Vacation may be taken only if it has been accrued.  Unused vacation may be accrued to a maximum of 240 hours.

Sick Leave

Full-time members receive 40 hours of sick leave upon joining the Company.  The member will then accrue sick leave on an hourly basis to a maximum of two hours per pay period not to exceed a maximum total of 72 hours.
Sick leave accrual begins on the first day of employment or transfer to a benefit eligible position. 
Paid sick leave may be taken only if it has been accrued. 
Unused sick leave may be carried over from year to year to a maximum of 72 hours.
Part-time members regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week will receive sick leave benefits on a pro rata basis.

Short Term Disability

Short Term Disability is provided at no cost to all eligible members. Full-time and eligible part-time members may use Short Term Disability for their own personal illness or injury.
Short Term Disability pays 100% of a member’s base pay after an illness or injury exceeds five days (one workweek).  Medical substantiation is required prior to receiving Short Term Disability.

Long Term Disability

Long Term Disability is provided at no cost to all eligible members and may be applied for after the initial 60-day elimination period covered by Sick Leave (if accrued) and Short Term Disability.  Long Term Disability pays 60% of monthly base pay (up to a maximum of $10,000.00 per month). 

Parental Leave

Full-time members are entitled to five paid parental leave days upon the occurrence of the birth or adoption of a child/children.  Paid parental leave days must be used all at one time, and must be used within six months of the occurrence.

Bereavement Leave

Full-time members are entitled to take up to three consecutive workdays with pay to attend the funeral and take care of personal matters relating to the death of a parent, spouse, spouse’s parent, child, spouse’s child, brother, sister, grandparent or grandchild.  One day of paid leave is available for the death of a brother-in-law, sister-in-law, spouse’s grandparent, a spouse’s grandchild, or any of the extended family living in the individual’s home.  In addition, full-time members will receive an additional two days for travel if the funeral is more than 300 miles from Kansas City.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

An Employee Assistance Program is provided at no cost to all members, fellows, graduate students and others who receive direct or indirect remuneration from their employer, and individuals significant to them. New Directions, a nationally recognized EAP company, provides a free, confidential EAP that includes the following services: phone consultants available 24/7; up to six face-to-face counseling sessions (per incident) per participant; interactive online resource covering a wide range of topics including Family Life, Stress, Finances, Legal, Health and Wellness, Emotional Wellbeing and Business Management and referrals to resources, services and support in the community.

Fitness Center

The Health Club located at The Stowers Institute is available for use by Covered Individuals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.   On each visit a SGC member, fellow, or student (“Host”) may have one Guest who is not a family member and a reasonable number of family members as Guests.  Hosts must be on the Institute premises while their Guest(s) use the Health Club and are asked to limit the number of Guests during times of peak usage.

Note:  Benefits are available for members regularly scheduled for 20 or more hours per week, unless noted differently in the contents of this document.  Leave plans are pro-rated based on a part-time member’s regular schedule.  Part-time members are generally entitled to holiday pay if they are regularly scheduled to work on the holiday.  Additional benefit information and materials will be provided upon hire date.  This overview is intended as a summary only, and the specific terms of each individual benefit plan and leave policy govern.  Please consult the applicable policies and plan documents for full details.
