Cell Culture Technician

The Stowers Institute has an opening for a Cell Culture Technician.  This position will include weekend work.

Responsibilities include maintaining mammalian and insect cell lines; expanding cell lines to meet researchers requirements; cultivating cells on plates or in flasks, and in roller bottles and/or spinner flasks for larger-scale (10-100 liter) cultures; Participating in the scheduling and delivery of all cell lines as requested; preparing and maintaining cell bank and managing storage database as required; quality control assays such as freeze test, sterility test, serum and mycoplasma testing, and others as needed; evaluating newly introduced cell lines for mycoplasma, bacterial, mold and other contamination, and for release from quarantine as needed; conducting routine and specialized assays as needed; preparing media, nutrient feeds, buffers, and reagents for cell culture and analytical work.  Performing daily duties with minimal supervision.

Additional responsibilities include set up and maintenance of equipment and instruments; keeping accurate record of observations in LIMS database and/or laboratory notebooks; maintaining a clean and organized work area; ordering raw materials; maintaining inventory; assisting in the writing and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures; and performing daily duties with minimal supervision.

The successful candidate will have mastered a broad spectrum of basic and advanced laboratory techniques in Molecular and Cell Biology and will have excellent sterile technique, outstanding oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in life sciences or equivalent, 3+ years practical experience, and demonstrated working knowledge of cell culture, cell biology, and related techniques.
