Research Technician (Screening)
The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Research Technician in the Screening core facility to perform tasks and experimentation to aid in building reagents for assays used in large scale genomic and compound screens.
Responsibilities include routine maintenance of tissue culture cells and transfection of cultured cells in microtiter formats; immunohistochemistry on cultured cells; molecular biology task including PCR, bacterial colony picking, propagation and plasmid DNA preparation; cloning of plasmid DNA; programming, QC and maintenance of simple automated instrumentation; biochemical assays in microtiter plates; and general lab maintenance and inventory.
In addition to excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment, the successful candidate will have an exceptional attention to detail, the ability to multitask, and a curiosity for understanding biology and biological processes.
Minimum requirements include an undergraduate degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry or a related field with at least 1 to 3 years of related laboratory experience, or a Master’s degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry or a related field with 1 year of related laboratory experience.
Additional preferred skills include experience with assay development and screening in microtiter format; tissue culture and transfection of mammalian or non-mammalian cells; prior experience with PCR, plasmid DNA cloning, and other molecular biology techniques; a basic background in transcription, signal transduction, or cell biology; experience with cell-based reporter assay systems or screening small molecules; experience in high content imaging; robotic experience with one or more robotic systems, programming and troubleshooting of robotic instrumentation, biological readouts in microtiter formats, and bioinformatics or information management experience.
