2012 Summer Scholars

This was the second year for The Graduate School to coordinate the Stowers Summer Scholars Program that started at the Stowers Institute in 2004. We had 39 participants out of 180 applicants (record numbers of each). Scholars hailed from 14 states and 5 countries, representing 30 schools. We were extremely pleased by the group and their overwhelmingly positive research experiences.

Most common sentiments from Scholars:

“My favorite part of this was the independence of the research. I was able to really put a lot into 10 weeks…the independence was critical.” – Thomas White, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO

“Amazed by the facility” – Lindsey Fong, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburg, PA

Most important things they learned:

“Way to think about science” – Chen Li, Wuhan University, China

“Having to present my work to my lab members and to the larger scientific community” – Shivang Desai, Brown University, Providence, RI

“Learned how to get past scientific obstacles with a supportive lab. Learned how to interact with lab members to better my science.” – Scott McMahon, Truman State University, Kirksville, MO
