2025 alumnus Augusto Ortega Granillo, Ph.D., reflects on scientific freedom, a diverse research community, and his path from the Stowers Institute to the Max Planck Institute.
For Augusto Ortega Granillo, Ph.D., the Stowers Graduate School was a place where curiosity could lead the way. During his time as a student, he conducted research in the lab of Stowers Institute President and Chief Scientific Officer Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado, studying regeneration in killifish.
“While working with killifish I became fascinated by this question: When the fin of a Killifish is injured, how does its body know the extent of the damage and what is needed to repair itself?” Ortega Granillo said. “Studying at Stowers provided rigorous training, but also the freedom to pursue what truly interested me.”

Now a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute, he is continuing to build on the foundation he developed during his graduate school training. Ortega Granillo emphasized the freedom to deeply explore biology and pursue fundamental questions. “The intellectual openness of the grad school helped me identify where I could grow and how to become a better scientist,” he explained. “I now aim to pursue not just what is known, but what remains unexplored – by asking bigger, riskier scientific questions.”
Beyond the research itself, Ortega Granillo highlights the Graduate School’s diverse and international community as a defining part of his experience. “It’s amazing to be immersed in an environment that values both scientific excellence and collaboration, while also gaining perspectives that extend beyond the lab,” he said. “Stowers really prepared me for this next stage of my career.”
