The Stowers institute sits on a 10-acre campus located in the heart of Kansas City. Our scientists work with core Technology Centers to answer questions regarding the mysteries of life and make a significant contribution to human health. The institute has spent more than $1.8 billion on foundational biomedical research to help guide the development of innovative approaches to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease.
Through the study of fundamental biology and the unique capabilities of research organisms, Stowers Institute scientists are learning more each day about what makes life work and what underlies health conditions like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes in humans. By expanding our understanding of the genes and proteins that guide the function and behavior of all living organisms, we hope to one day help provide knowledge that contributes to improved treatment, better prevention, and ultimately cures.
The Institute attracts the best and brightest thought leaders from around the world due to our unique funding structure which allows our scientists the freedom and flexibility to ask life’s most interesting questions, and gives them the time to find answers.
