Sergio Barroso Bordon

What initially attracted you to the Stowers Graduate School, and why did you choose to apply here?

I first experienced Stowers through the Summer Scholars Program in 2023, which gave me a full sense of life at the Institute. After spending years in large universities, I was surprised by how supportive and approachable the staff and faculty are.

What unique aspects of the Stowers Graduate School program have had the biggest impact on your research and academic development?

I think it is the very particular module arrangement this Ph.D. program offers. During the first semester, we focus intensely on coursework, ensuring that the rotations during the second semester aren’t affected by classes. Now that I’ve joined my thesis lab, I can give 100% to the research I’m most excited about.

How has the collaborative environment at the Institute helped shape your research experience so far?

The highly interdisciplinary nature of the Stowers Institute is its greatest strength. My thesis project relies on advanced bioinformatics, sequencing, and microscopy. I’ve been able to acquire and integrate these skills directly from experts across our outstanding Technology Centers.

Can you share a moment or experience that made you feel particularly proud or inspired during your time here?

This past September, I was delighted to present my latest findings at the Crossroads Research Conference, the Institute’s annual internal meeting. After two years at the Institute, sharing my work with such a talented audience was deeply rewarding.

What do you believe sets the Stowers Graduate School apart from other graduate programs in terms of resources, mentorship, and opportunities for growth?

I would definitely highlight the level of support and resources available to graduate students. We have the freedom and flexibility to pursue the biological questions we’re most passionate about, which really fosters creativity and curiosity-driven research.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering the Stowers Graduate School? What makes it a great fit for future researchers?

The Stowers Institute is a truly unique place in every sense. Scientifically, there are virtually no limits. The Institute is designed for us to answer unprecedented questions. Beyond that, I always emphasize the strong sense of community. For me, as an international student, having this kind of family away from home is very important.

How has the Stowers Graduate School supported your career goals, both in terms of your current research and your professional development?

I really appreciate the career exploration events organized by both the Graduate School and the Crossroads Committee. These allow us to connect with professionals from a wide range of scientific environments, from biomedical industry and scientific writing to areas like environmental biotechnology. And the Grad School alumni panels provide useful guidance on the different possible career paths that Stowers can open for us.
