The Electron Microscopy Center at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for an Associate Scientist to support researchers at the Institute using state-of-the-art Electron Microscopy and X-ray-based micro-CT imaging equipment. This role will include collaborative meetings for experimental design, sample processing/cutting/mounting, imaging, report writing, and discussing experimental results.
As an Associate Scientist, you will work both independently and collaboratively with researchers and electron microscopy department members.
Responsibilities Include:
- Collaborating with Stowers PI lab members on their scientific research, analyzing data, and presenting data/results
- Learning and using complex software and instrumentation.
- Performing all tasks associated with basic to complex SOPs, with high proficiency and minimal supervision after training.
- Attending related scientific meetings, conferences, and symposiums regularly to stay abreast of new research and techniques to share with the department and institute.
- Troubleshooting technical and scientific issues
- Documenting and communicating results and progress to both internal and external scientists.
- Responding to researcher requests for projects and offering training where applicable
- Other lab duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- Ph.D. in cell, molecular, developmental biology, or a related field and 2+ years of electron microscopy experience or 8+ years of electron microscopy experience.
- Strong and effective communication skills
- Light Microscopy and micro-CT experience are strongly preferred.
- Experience with any analysis or programming platforms such as Fiji, Napari, Amira and ChimeraX is a plus.
The successful candidate can perform routine and repetitive sample processing and ultramicrotome sample cutting and can think in three dimensions. Ultimately, we are looking for someone curious, engaged, and willing to grow.
