Students are encouraged to appreciate the beauty of nature so that they never lose the joy of doing science.

What makes the Stowers Graduate School’s program unique is its structure—students complete all coursework, in the form of seven two-week modules, within the first semester, allowing them to swiftly transition into hands-on lab work.
“We are not teaching semester-long didactic courses,” said Stowers Investigator Tatjana Piotrowski, Ph.D. “Instead, students quickly apply what they have learned in lectures directly to lab experiments.”
Another defining feature of the Graduate School, which also distinguishes the Stowers Institute, is size—where smaller means stronger. “Students are mentored by all Stowers scientists,” said Piotrowski.
In the lab, students follow the scientific method where hypotheses are based on observations, refined through rigorous experimentation, and iteratively tested to ensure new knowledge is factual. Piotrowski values this intellectual exchange and meets regularly with students to discuss their data and explore alternative interpretations.
“This back-and-forth is essential to do proper science,” said Piotrowski. “It is equally important that students remember to appreciate the beauty of nature, be it at the level of cells or how animals evolve, so that they never lose the joy of doing science.”
Ultimately, the transition from mentor to mentee is the goal for trainees to become independent researchers.
“This transition is what we are striving for,” said Piotrowski. “The most rewarding part of teaching is when students start to teach me. That’s when I know they are ready to begin their own research programs.”
The Stowers Graduate School provides an immersive scientific environment, abundant resources, and scientific and intellectual support, preparing students to succeed. This same recipe for success is also in place for Stowers Investigators.
“It really is a dream to do science here,” said Piotrowski.
Piotrowski’s research focuses on the development and regeneration of the zebrafish lateral line sensory system, which offers insight into human sensory organ development and disease. Learn more about the Piotrowski Lab here.
