Fostering the future of foundational science leaders
The Stowers Graduate School recently welcomed the newest class of predoctoral researchers on August 12, 2024. Ten talented early-career scientists entered the Ph.D. program, designed to guide their development into the next generation of scientific leaders through immersive education and research experience.
By emphasizing critical thinking and equipping predocs with the ability to apply cutting-edge technologies and techniques to their research, the program positions these individuals to make significant scientific contributions in the field of biology. After just one semester of rigorous course modules spanning topics ranging from development to neuroscience followed by three rotations in Stowers Investigator labs, predocs will be primed to identify and answer a significant biological question for the remainder of their thesis research.
“I was drawn to the rich diversity of research happening here, in terms of both the ideas and the vast array of research organisms available to answer any question,” said new Predoctoral Researcher Michael Epp.
Stowers Graduate School predocs have unparalleled support through mentorship by world-class scientists along with access to state-of-the-art technologies and instrumentation. The highly collaborative environment between Principal Investigator labs, Technology Centers, and staff combined with the relatively small class size enables a quality of education supplemented with hands-on experience to prepare these early-career researchers for successful scientific careers.
“The Institute provides endless support and an academic family,” said Dilan Sakinci, a member of the 2024 class. “It is an environment where you can work collaboratively with people guiding and supporting you through your Ph.D.”

From Technology Networks, research from the Stowers Institute for Medical Research offers new hope in the search for novel antiviral treatments and vaccines against dengue viral infections. Dengue and other viruses preferentially use a host’s less efficient codons, possibly to evade an antiviral response.
