The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a full-time Communications and Storytelling Manager. This position will be responsible for developing, writing, editing and managing content that effectively communicates the mission and scientific vision of the Stowers Institute for external audiences. This individual will be a proactive storyteller, responsible for editing and writing feature articles, news stories, press releases and multimedia content. They should be an exceptional writer, able to develop media pitches, original content for the Institute’s digital channels, and printed materials. This individual should have a passion for storytelling with experience writing articles and features, as well as experience translating complex subjects for broader audiences.

The Communications and Storytelling Manager should have a keen interest in science and a passion for writing and communicating through various platforms, including video. They will supervise the Digital and Social Media Specialist and the Sr. Science Writer. This position will report to the Head of External Communications and Media Relations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write and edit compelling stories that engage audiences, including original news stories and features that highlight research discoveries, breakthroughs, trends, and milestones across the Institute.
  • Write articles and help manage content for the Institute’s website and printed publications.
  • Work closely with scientists and stakeholders across the organization to source stories, gather information and create relevant content.
  • Help support media relations efforts, drafting media pitches and press releases, and helping to manage media outreach and development.
  • Monitor and measure the impact and effectiveness of media outreach and provide data-driven feedback and recommendations for improvement.
  • Supervise the Digital and Social Media Specialist and the Sr. Science Writer.
  • Provide support as needed across the Communications team.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or relevant degree and experience
  • 7+ years’ experience in communications, public relations, journalism, with a focus on writing
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Comfort with multimedia storytelling incorporating images, video, and sound into compelling narratives
  • Experience in managing and strategizing social media platforms
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time
  • Ability to analyze data and identify trends
  • Ability to work professionally and effectively with stakeholders across the organization

Additional Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Understanding of the media landscape and experience in building relationships with journalists
  • Coursework or experience in biology or related area a plus
