The Stowers Institute for Medical Research is searching for a General Maintenance Engineer Lead. The Lead is an integral member of the Plant, Engineering & Maintenance (PE&M) Department. This role requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team-oriented environment, while also serving as a team leader. The Lead is responsible for repairing and maintaining the Institute’s mechanical, plumbing, and lighting systems, as well as providing guidance and mentorship to fellow engineers. In addition, this position serves as a key resource and point of support in the absence of the Department Head.
Major Responsibilities:
- Strong communication skills while communicating with members of the PE&M department as well as internal customers and external contractors.
- Assists with setting daily goals for General Maintenance Engineer team, and models/reinforces excellent technical and customer service skills.
- Assists with departmental long-term planning for equipment, process, etc.
- Works within all safety requirements, ensuring that all work is performed as safely as possible. This would include training others and/or working with the onsite Environmental, Health and Safety department.
- Works within the current online incident and PM ticketing system. This includes triaging tickets as well as completing them and ensuring they are closed out accurately and timely.
- Research and implement solutions to better utilize in-house staff and external supply vendors in the most cost-effective manner.
- Department supply and parts ordering and tracking, ensuring that the department has appropriate supplies onsite.
- Strong skills in all aspects of HVAC. chillers, boilers, system controls, and air distribution.
- Troubleshoots and remedies reported maintenance issues and works to prevent future reported issues through developing and implementing maintenance schedules for institute facilities and related equipment
- Performs general mechanical repairs including greasing motors, replacing air handler filters, and belts
- Performs electrical repairs which could include replacing lamps and ballasts, defective switches and outlets
- Keeps all mechanical spaces and rooms clean and organized. This includes making sure that all equipment and rooms are appropriately labeled and signed.
Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent
Experience/ Abilities:
- A Missouri Class “A” Operating Engineers License
- Minimum of 6 years of maintenance experience working in central utility plant(s) and large-scale mechanical systems such as a laboratory or hospital setting.
- Prior experience in commercial electrical, plumbing, and/or mechanical maintenance and repair.
- A general working knowledge of maintenance related issues
- Basic knowledge of Johnson Controls Metasys Building Management system
Physical Requirements:
- Required to stand and walk, pushing a cart and lifting heavy objects for long periods of time
- Required to frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, push, pull and occasionally to sit
- Required to regularly lift and/or move 75 pounds, and occasionally lift or move 100+ pounds
- Required to read and recognize signage and container labeling which requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
- Required to grasp, pull, finger, feel, and complete repetitive motions
- While performing the tasks of this job, individuals will be working in laboratory and maintenance environments where it is possible that the following may occur:
- exposure to hazardous materials such as chemical vapors, mists and fumes, particulates, biohazardous materials, radioactive materials, etc.
- exposure to wet or humid and/or temporarily hot or cold temperature conditions
- work with or near moving mechanical parts
- work in noisy areas
