Research Technician – Rodents Department
The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Research Technician to support the Rodents Department. This position plays a vital role in maintaining high standards of animal care and supporting research through effective animal husbandry and colony management.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Maintain and monitor animal husbandry, health, and physical environments across various animal care settings.
- Monitor and maintain rodent research colonies including breeding and expansion.
- Perform various procedures such as injections, blood, and tissue collection in accordance with established protocols.
- Assist researchers with restraint, handling, and manipulation of rodents in a controlled environment.
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies and animal welfare standards.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment
- Physical capability to lift and move 50–100 pounds, as well as sit, stand, and move throughout animal facilities
- Proficiency in using scientific equipment and computers
- Strong attention to detail and accurate recordkeeping skills
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s Degree or equivalent education/experience
Preferred Qualifications
AALAS certification and prior experience in animal handling, husbandry, and production.
Work Environment
This position involves hands-on work in animal care environments and requires adherence to strict safety, cleanliness, and animal welfare standards.
Holiday and weekend work may be required.
