Inspired by Collaboration: Meet Summer Scholar Alejandra Carrillo-Carlos

From Mexico to Kansas City, the undergraduate researcher in the Zeitlinger Lab shares how the Stowers Graduate School’s Summer Scholars program has invigorated her to pursue of a career in science.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from, what are you studying, and what sparked your interest in science?

I was born and raised in Mexico, and I am currently a second-year Genomic Sciences student at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

I never imagined pursuing a career in science, but a high school class project sparked my fascination with the immune system's intricate networks and remarkable complexity. That curiosity eventually expanded beyond immunology and into gene regulation and the mechanisms that control how our cells function. What I enjoy most about science is that every question leads to another one, making it a field where there's always something new to discover.

What made you apply to the Stowers Graduate School Summer Scholars Program?

I wanted the opportunity to do hands-on research at a world-class institution. I was looking for an environment where I could challenge myself, learn from outstanding scientists, and be surrounded by people driven by curiosity. The Summer Scholars Program through the Stowers Graduate School felt like the perfect fit, while also reinforcing my goal of pursuing a Ph.D.

What research are you working on this summer?  

I'm working in the Zeitlinger Lab, studying how genes are regulated. Every cell in our body contains essentially the same DNA, but different genes need to be turned on or off at the right place and time. My project focuses on DNA elements called insulators, which help make sure genes respond only to the correct signals. I like to think of it as trying to understand the grammar of DNA. If regulatory elements are like words, I'm trying to figure out the rules that determine how those words are arranged to create meaningful instructions for the cell.

What has been the most exciting, surprising, or memorable part of your experience so far?

One of the most memorable parts has been the collaborative environment at the Stowers Institute and the Graduate School. It creates a space where you can focus entirely on the science because you're surrounded by people who are genuinely invested in helping each other succeed. I've also been incredibly inspired by the other Summer Scholars. Their curiosity, kindness, and passion for research have made this experience truly special.

How has working alongside Stowers scientists and mentors influenced your perspective on research or your future career?

It has reinforced that I want to pursue research as a career. Beyond learning new techniques, I've seen firsthand how collaboration and different perspectives lead to better science. It's changed the way I approach scientific questions and encouraged me to think more creatively and critically about research.

What is one lesson or skill you'll take with you after this summer?

One of the biggest lessons I'll take with me is to stay curious and keep an open mind. I already knew a great deal about gene regulation prior to the program, but I’ve now also had the chance to learn about other areas of biology through seminars and conversations. This experience reminded me that science is incredibly broad, and you never know what topic might spark your curiosity. It inspired me to keep exploring new fields and not limit myself to what I already know.

If you could leave future Summer Scholars with one piece of advice, what would it be?

Be patient with yourself and embrace the learning process. Research can be challenging. Not every experiment or analysis will go the way you expect. But those unexpected results often teach you the most valuable lessons. Take advantage of everything the program has to offer: Talk to people outside your lab, ask questions, share your work, and be curious about what others are doing. The people you meet here are among the best parts of the experience. You never know where a conversation might lead or what it might inspire.
