Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado, Ph.D., reflects on a year of discovery, gratitude, and the community that helps support our mission.

A message from Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado, Ph.D.

Dear Friends of the Stowers Institute,

As 2025 has drawn to a close, gratitude is now front of mind: for the science that inspires us, the people who make it possible, and the community that sustains our shared pursuit of knowledge.

Twenty-five years ago, our founders, Jim and Virginia Stowers, believed that unprecedented medical breakthroughs would emerge from deeper insights into life at the molecular level, and they built the Stowers Institute to pursue that conviction. Our distinctive funding framework, anchored by American Century Investments, allows us to take the long view: to support ambitious, curiosity-driven science; to invest in advanced facilities and technologies; and to recruit and retain extraordinary talent.

That long-term commitment matters, especially as the scientific landscape shifts at a breathtaking pace. What remains constant is our responsibility to advance our founders’ vision with integrity, creativity, and hope. Each day, more than 500 dedicated individuals work together in a culture of collaboration, where rigorous knowledge-seeking is shared, and curiosity is harnessed in service of human progress.

This past year brought discoveries that deepen our understanding of how life works and remind us why curiosity remains our most reliable compass. I invite you to learn more about our research as you explore 15 highlights from our 2025 Year in Review.

The review reflects the research you helped make possible, from new insights into genome organization, regeneration, aging, and infection to advances that may one day inform treatments for hearing loss, infertility, and disease.

As we continue celebrating a quarter-century of discovery, we also look ahead to the next 25 years. I believe the Stowers Institute is poised not simply to keep pace with scientific progress, but to help define it. Thank you for your enduring support and for being part of this community.

From all of us at the Institute, may this new year bring you and your loved ones abundant health, wonder, purpose, and the exhilarating joy of discovery.

With gratitude,
Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado, Ph.D.
President and Chief Scientific Officer
